Ben Garard

Soldier in the Australian army 2008-2011, including deployment in Timor. Born into a sporting family with his parents and 3 siblings all excelling in sport. Ben was a champion swimmer and also top rugby league and hockey player as a teenager. His brother and 2 sisters all compete in CrossFit competitions, with younger brother, Ricky, already making his own mark on the world stage. Ben also loves snowboarding.

Athlete Profile

Ever since he was a kid, Ben has been passionate about sport, health, fitness and competition and being the best he can be and now commands an enviable reputation in both Australia and the United States as a gutsy, elite athlete who almost always finishes on the podium.

While serving in the Australian army from 2008 to 2011, Ben decided he wanted to forge a career in strength and conditioning, becoming a personal trainer soon after leaving military service. Just four months after discovering CrossFit in February, 2012, Ben found himself amongst the top 60 men in Australia and New Zealand at the Australian CrossFit Regional competition. It was then, after coming 25th, that he set himself the lofty goal of becoming one of only five CrossFit athletes in Australia, Asia and New Zealand who qualify each year to make the sport’s peak event – the prestigious CrossFit Games in LA – an ambition Ben, known for his gritty fortitude and strength of mind, is determined to achieve.

Although he was crowned the ‘Fittest Bloke in Australia’ in 2013 at the Men’s Fitness Magazine Fit Bloke Challenge, 2013 was, overall, an unlucky year for Ben. At that year’s CrossFit Open, Ben - after posting equal highest scores in the world - was disqualified on a technicality surrounding video analysis of movement standards in one exercise. Priding himself on good form, Ben bounced back in 2014, finishing the Games open 2nd in Australia and 16th worldwide but a severe illness just before the 2014 Regionals put paid to his LA Games ambition that year, although he still finished 11th at Regionals while ill.

Bouncing back again like the kangaroo US followers have likened him to, Ben was invited to play as a professional athlete for the San Francisco Fire team in the inaugural NPGL competition in the US in 2014. Ben’s team finished the season in second place and he looks forward to competing for the Fire again in 2015.

In January, 2015, Ben finished second in the huge Orange County Throwdown (OCT) CrossFit comp in LA and his elite men’s team also finished on the podium at another major contest in Miami in January – the Wodapalooza. And in February, 2015, Ben’s reputation as one of Australia’s top CrossFit stars was bolstered again with a first place at the heatwave-affected Riverside Jam Cross Fit contest in Perth – the third podium result for the ever-improving athlete already this year.
